Patients often ask how soon will they be able to see results after a CoolSculpting treatment. At Davis Plastic Surgery we have found that only a few patients will show results in as soon as 1 month, but a more consistent finding is that it takes 2-3 months to see the final result. We typically see patients for follow up between 8 – 10 weeks. At that point, we take after pictures and can make an assessment if the treatment worked well for them, if they need another treatment in the same area or if they would like to treat a different area.

We did decide to take this patient’s Before and After pictures right before 6 weeks – because she was so insistent about her results! She is thrilled and we are going to be sure to take them around 10 weeks again.

Ahhh, tis’ the new year. Which means making (and breaking) those infamous resolutions. Every year most of us start out with a long, thoughtfully crafted list that dramatically gets whittled down around February. By March we’ve all but written off my resolutions checklist, blaming lack of time (and willpower). Then, from April through November, we beat ourselves up for not achieving better gym ethic, saving more money, losing weight, eating healthier, and mastering Words With Friends. Well, as they say: out with the old and in with the new…

That’s right. New year, new list! And in honor of making 2012 a pretty one, here are some attainable beauty resolutions worth putting on your radar, AND some specials to help your budget from Davis Plastic Surgery!

Taking better care of your skin: It would be great if we could simply “exchange” our skin for a newer, healthier version every so many years – but since we can’t, it’s critical to show your skin some attention. All the oldies but goodies remain true. Washing your face every night, slathering on the SPF daily (30+), and drinking enough water will all pay big dividends in your skin’s health. If 2011 brought you some new ‘beauty spots’ on your face that are unwanted – zap them with IPL!

Pampering your hands: Hands are the first giveaway of a person’s age. And it’s no wonder with the stress we put them through (namely cleaning and harsh weather). The most important rule? Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. And don’t forget your hands need SPF, too!

Showing your neck some love: It’s easy to forget about our “décolletage” but the neck and chest areas need just as much love as your face. Don’t forget to moisturize these parts (at night slather on a rich body crème), and apply a strong SPF during the day. We can barely keep Nectifirm on our shelves – patients love it! Fraxel laser is also a very popular treatment to tighten up that ‘not so tight’ neck skin.

Keeping it clean: When life is extra busy, our makeup bag is the last thing we think about cleaning (and you know it’s time when your lip gloss has formed a “crust” around the rim). To clean your bag, empty out its contents and use a clean dish sponge, soap and water to give the inside a good scrub. (Let air dry completely before putting contents back.) For your eye and lip pencils, simply sharpen them to remove any germs or dirt. For lip gloss, mascaras, or items that tend to form buildup around the rim, use a tissue and alcohol to remove the gunk. And don’t forget about your makeup brushes! It’s recommended to wash these weekly to avoid breakouts.

While these beauty goals sound easy enough, according to a study done by Bristol University only 12% actually achieve their New Year’s plan. So how does one join the 12% club? Whether your list includes these beauty to-dos or more depthful goals – here are some easy (yet effective) strategies to ensure they don’t fall by the wayside:

Keep it real: If your goals are ultra unrealistic, or read like a War and Peace novel, your chances for success are slim. Set realistic goals and keep the number of them manageable.

Own it: Share your resolutions with close friends and family members. By doing this, you’re publicly “owning” your goals and will have the added bonus of having bragging rights when you achieve them.

Reward it: It’s hard to stay motivated if you never reward yourself! If your goal is a 20 lb weight loss, after you’ve lost the first 5 reward yourself with a new gym outfit. Lost 10? New running shoes! Lost 20?! Congratulations! If there are still areas left over that you don’t like – treat yourself to CoolSculpting!

Here’s to a pretty 2012. What do your New Year’s resolutions include?

Leave some things behind in 2011 – like your love-handles!

CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ is a breakthrough, non-invasive technology that freezes away stubborn fat. CoolSculpting gently targets and cools unwanted fat cells in the selected area to induce a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat bulges. Each CoolSculpting procedure results in an average 20% (or more!) reduction of fat in the treated area.

Unlike most other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, surgery, or downtime. Patients often spend the one to two hours of procedure time reading, watching a movie on our iPad, working on their laptops, or simply relaxing.

Results can be seen in as soon as three weeks following treatment, with the best results occurring over the next two to four months.

This Davis Plastic Surgery patient is 8 weeks out from CoolSculpting to her central abdomen and love-handles.

Before & After CoolSculpting at Davis Plastic Surgery

What happens during the procedure?
First we will work with you to determine the best areas to treat. For instance, if your goal is to reduce your love handles, our staff will position the system on your side. The device then draws the bulge up between two cooling panels. The sensation is a firm tug and pull – enough of a pull to ensure the selected tissue will be cooled most efficiently.

What does it feel like?
As the panels go to work in the first few minutes, you will feel a sensation of intense cold. This soon dissipates. You will be seated comfortably or lying down during the procedure in a comfortable and private room.

Can I return to normal activities after the procedure?
Yes. The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-invasive, so you can return to normal activities immediately. You may experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary.

When will I see results?
You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still be flushing fat cells at that time, and will continue doing so for up to four months.

Are the results permanent?
During the CoolSculpting procedure, the treated fat cells are eliminated. As long as you maintain your weight with normal diet and exercise, long-term results should remain stable.

Last year, Simon Cowell gave it to his co-workers on The X Factor. Stars including Kim Kardashian, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Kylie Minogue have all openly admitted to using it. Celebrities from London to Los Angeles, are asking Santa for a Botox beauty boost this Christmas.

Records show that a record number of celebrities have booked in for Botox over the festive period. The procedure takes around 10 minutes, making it perfect to fit in the schedule of any A-list celebrity.

Botox was once a celebrity secret, but the days of secrecy are over with many clinics nationwide specializing in cosmetic treatments. Christmas is coming and now is the perfect time to solve your anti-wrinkle problems.

According to dermatologist Tina Alster of Washington D. C., “Botox remains the gold standard for treating crow’s lines and wrinkles”. Why let your favorite celebrities get one step ahead, book your free consultation with Jenna in time for your Christmas party – and save! Our December Botox special of $10/unit can be combined with the $50 rebate from the company – making it a fantastic value. But be quick, both offers expire Dec. 31st.

CoolSculpting is the only FDA approved non-invasive device for PERMANENT fat removal. Davis Plastic Surgery is excited to offer this new technology to his patients on top of surgical procedures. We are able not only offer the full spectrum of body contouring options, but the knowledge to know the limits of each to help you decide which choice is best for you! Dr. Davis also remains current in examining the other new technologies and can help you weed through the confusion of marketing hype vs real results.

The three main options for abdominal contouring are from least invasive to most invasive: CoolSculpting, Liposuction, and Tummy Tuck (aka Abdominoplasty.)

CoolSculpting’s biggest benefit is by far the non-invasiveness, minimal downtime aspect. The procedure is done in the office with no pain medicine required. Though there is an initial intense pull from the suction of the device, the cooling quickly takes effect and the remainder of the procedure is quite comfortable. The procedure takes an hour per area. The middle of the abdomen, the love handles, muffin tops, flanks, and bra rolls have the best result if there is enough to grab. There are two sizes of the device which can be used per area. The larger size costs around $1400, the smaller costs around $700. The correct size necessary depends on the examination.

The best results are going to be patients within 10-25 lbs of ideal body weight with good skin tone with localized fatty deposits. 20-20% of the fat in the treated area will be permanently removed. CoolSculpting is literally spot treating fat, something sit-ups simply cannot do. It is an excellent option because the no down time, means you can have it done, then go workout, go back to work, whatever you like. As to be expected, the treatment is not a green light for excessive eating and sedentary living. Patients with large fatty deposits, spread out fatty deposits, large rotund bellies with internal abdominal fat, and those with extra skin do not benefit well from CoolSculpting.

The other non-invasive options do not even come close at this point, relying heavily on marketing hype and gimmicks to entice the consumer. This includes low level laser energy which does not even penetrate the skin, radio-frequency technologies, externally applied creams, etc. Many of these therapies rely heavily on diet restrictions and exercise which are essential to weight loss, but do not spot treat problem areas.

The next option for body contouring is Liposuction. Liposuction is done by making small incisions and using a suction cannula removing the fat. This is not however considered a weight loss procedure and though it is done through small incisions IS definitely invasive. Current techniques are done to make the procedure more comfortable, more effective, and have less complications. Different technologies can be used to help make the removal of fat easier for the the surgeon. This includes lasers, ultrasonic, radio-frequency, power assisted, power washed, etc. Each of these companies would like the patient to think that the technology is better, safer, lease invasive, etc. This has not ever been scientifically proven and simply is not true. (In fact studies have shown few plastic surgeons use the laser lipo devices and those that do, most only do it for the marketing angle.) The use of tumescent fluid and a “super wet” technique is done for comfort (because the fluid contains local anesthetic), for less bruising and bleeding (because the fluid contains epinephrine), and for safety of the tissues as it relates to the heating of the tissues using either a laser or ultrasonic probe. Small amounts of this can typically be tolerated without anesthesia, larger amounts benefit greatly from sedation and general anesthesia. This is what we use at Davis Plastic Surgery.

The benefits of liposuction include the greater ability to contour and remove larger areas of fat. The drawbacks are the recovery time and cost for liposuction is higher because of the operating room and anesthesia necessary. Safety is key, this procedure is not without complications and should only be done by properly trained physicians. A patient should strongly consider the physician and their credentials. Be aware that specific technologies such as laser liposuction heavily target non-core physicians (non Plastic Surgeons) who are eager to please and happy to charge, without the knowledge in safety nor the ability to gauge their own limitations. Many physicians will feel confident after a weekend course or an online webinar. A garment is typically worn for several weeks as well. Downtime varies per person and per area, but is not insignificant in even the smallest of areas treated. Return to full activities generally takes a couple of weeks. Liposuction remains a poor choice when extra skin is the problem. Excess skin and patients with poor skin tone do not benefit from fat removal without skin excision.

Finally abdominoplasty, aka tummy tuck, is the procedure of choice for skin redundancy of the abdomen. Frequently this will be used along with liposuction of the flanks for contouring of the trunk. The benefits are readily apparent with a tight abdominal wall and removal of excess skin and fat. The drawbacks are the downtime, the cost, the pain, the scarring, the potential for complications of either the anesthesia, the recovery, or the scarring. That being said frequently this is the best procedure for the patient’s wishes and is well worth the risk. For the rotund abdomen with intra-abdominal fat (it can’t be pinched on the outside with the abdominal muscles tight) can only be treated with weight loss. Again, a tummy tuck is also not a treatment for weight loss. However, in the right patient, It can be a great boost to someones overall appearance and self confidence. Recovery time is typically 4-6 weeks, though return to work and most activities is within a couple of weeks.
