A chemical peel is used to treat people who have facial blemishes, wrinkles, uneven skin pigmentation and even acne scars. It is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin and can even be used to improve skin of your neck and your hands. There are different levels of chemical peels and the deeper it penetrates, the more visible results you can achieve, but the lengthier the recovery period may be. Selecting the best chemical or chemical mix for you is individual to your skin condition. A solution is applied using a cotton pad, swab, or brush to the areas to be treated. A gray-white film, referred to as “frost,” develops on the skin by the end of the application. The peeling solution is left in place for a few minutes and then thoroughly neutralized or removed with water. Most peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs. We choose to use a combination of chemicals for your procedure to tailor the treatment specifically to your skin type and condition.
Mild Chemical solutions like beta hydroxyl acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid are used to lightly peel the skin with little or no downtime. They are typically done in a series to maintain results over time, and combined with an at-home skin-care regimen for best results.
Jessner’s Solution, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), or other solutions are used to correct pigment problems, superficial blemishes, moderate sun damage, fine lines, and weathered skin. TCA peels are typically performed in a doctor’s office. You may feel a warm or burning sensation, which is followed by some stinging, and there will be some crusting for 4-10 days.
Phenol-croton oil peels are usually performed as a onetime procedure. They can produce more dramatic, long-term results on wrinkles, brown age spots, mild scarring, and precancerous growths. Phenol peels are usually performed in a doctor’s office or surgicenter, and may require intravenous sedation.
