The Best (& Worst!) Cities for Skin

10 best and worst cities for your skinYou can see it lurking in a hazy layer over large cities. Its foul stench follows you through the streets. Sometimes you can even taste it. The culprit is smog. If the thought of breathing in a lungful of smog makes you choke because of the damage it can do to your respiratory system, you won’t be surprised to know that smog can also damage your skin.

Charlotte is one of the worst cities for the skin on our list because of its high ozone and pollution levels, with 26.2 high-ozone days out of the year. The American Lung Association also ranked Charlotte as the tenth worst city for ozone pollution in the US in 2010. Why is it so polluted? It may have something to do with the lack of air flow in the city on the hottest days of the year, which can be related to its geographic location: in the middle between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Coal-powered plants might also play a factor, as well as population growth.

Smog is a chemical cocktail of low-level ozone (molecules of three oxygen atoms bound together), particulates (such as dust, soot and smoke), and other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and lead. When pollutants in the atmosphere are absorbed through your skin, your whole body can suffer the consequences.

You hear a lot about the ozone layer these days, and for good reason. The ozone layer in the stratosphere, or upper atmosphere, protects you by blocking harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but ozone in the troposphere, or ground level, is a major component in smog.  When the sun’s rays hit the smog, it breaks down into free radicals. If they enter the body, the free radicals bounce all over the place within the cells and chip away the cells’ walls. Several diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, have been linked to free radical damage.

In addition to being a factor in serious diseases, free radical damage can also cause premature aging. When the pollutants in smog rob your skin of its oxygen supply, the result is signs of aging, such as wrinkles and loss of elasticity in the skin. If you already have mature skin, you will be more susceptible to high pollution concentrations because your ability to fight free radicals diminishes as you get older.

Fortunately, if you live in Charlotte – or any area with a significant amount of pollution, you don’t have to pack your bags!  (We ❤ Charlotte!)  There are measures you can take to protect your skin from pollution.

  • Antioxidant nutrients help to block free-radical activity in the body, so include antioxidant-rich foods in your diet.
  • Many skincare products contain antioxidant ingredients, such as vitamins A, C, and E-  Obagi has a popular Vitamin C serum line which neutralizes free radicals to prevent skin cell damage.  Skinceuticals also have an entire skincare line devoted to Prevention.
  • Cleanse your skin thoroughly at night to wash off collected dirt and grime.
  • Water: Stay hydrated to flush toxins through your system and keep your skin (and entire body) healthy.
  • Sunscreen!: The diminishing ozone layer results in increased UV exposure, more sunburns, and higher rates of melanoma. UV exposure increases free radical activity. Protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun and ozone.

What does a Chemical Peel do?

A chemical peel is used to treat people who have facial blemishes, wrinkles, uneven skin pigmentation and even acne scars.  It is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin and can even be used to improve skin of your neck and your hands.  There are different levels of chemical peels and the deeper it penetrates, the more visible results you can achieve, but the lengthier the recovery period may be. Selecting the best chemical or chemical mix for you is individual to your skin condition. A solution is applied using a cotton pad, swab, or brush to the areas to be treated. A gray-white film, referred to as “frost,” develops on the skin by the end of the application. The peeling solution is left in place for a few minutes and then thoroughly neutralized or removed with water. Most peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs. We choose to use a combination of chemicals for your procedure to tailor the treatment specifically to your skin type and condition.

Superficial Peels

Mild Chemical solutions like beta hydroxyl acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid are used to lightly peel the skin with little or no downtime. They are typically done in a series to maintain results over time, and combined with an at-home skin-care regimen for best results.

Medium Peels

Jessner’s Solution, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), or other solutions are used to correct pigment problems, superficial blemishes, moderate sun damage, fine lines, and weathered skin. TCA peels are typically performed in a doctor’s office. You may feel a warm or burning sensation, which is followed by some stinging, and there will be some crusting for 4-10 days.

Deep Peels

Phenol-croton oil peels are usually performed as a onetime procedure. They can produce more dramatic, long-term results on wrinkles, brown age spots, mild scarring, and precancerous growths. Phenol peels are usually performed in a doctor’s office or surgicenter, and may require intravenous sedation.

Complimentary skin scope analysis

Davis Plastic Surgery announces the Skin Scope Analyzer

The changing colors and shorter days are reminders that the summer sun is now gone and fall is upon us. The moist air that left your skin feeling soft and supple in the warmer months is now turning cool and dry. In turn, much like the leaves outside, the skin’s surface begins to tighten and develop a more brittle texture, which can make even the most youthful face look weathered.

The Aesthetics Department at Davis Plastic Surgery in Raleigh has a new and exciting method of skin analysis. The Skin Scope Analyzer, developed by Hansen Medical System, allows for Jenna Fitzgerald, RN to provide the most advanced skin analysis. This new generation of technology uses advanced black light technologies facial topography that fluoresce in a unique way highlighting the very different types of skin found on everyone’s face.

Jenna will view your face through a window and interpret what is being seen. A skin analysis is important for the early detection of sun damage and wrinkles.

The Skin Scope Analyzer more accurately aids in the determination of an individualized treatment. Armed with a customized skin care program and tips from our medical spa skin care experts, you’ll have glowing, supple skin through the fall.

Happy October!  We look forward to seeing you.
